This paper reports on a 40-year field experiment carried out on the Eggenalp in the Simmental valley (1340 m altitude), Switzerland. The alpine pasture was managed using different fertiliser application rates per hectare and year. In the summer of 1995 we analysed the influence of fertilisation on the botanical composition, especially the Poaceae species. The botanical composition was strongly affected by fertilisation. Both species richness ans Shannon Indices H' were highest in the unfertilised plots and decreased with increasing fertilisation levels. In the unfertilised plots we found more than 60 species, including some rare ones. In all fertilised plots species number was below 40.
