[Effect of Orobanche ramosa L on the reproductive capacity of aubergines (Solanum melongena L.)]

The negative effects produced by Orobanche ramosa L. on eggplant were evaluated in two cultivars, Blacknite and Dusky. The plants were grown in greenhouse during the 1992-93 season. The objetives were to confirm the eggplant affinity with O. ramosa and measure the detrimental effect of the parasite on the reproductive organs of the host. Half of the eggplants subject of the study, were artificially inoculated with O. ramosa seed at transplantation. In order to define the effect of broomrape, periodical counts of flower and fruits since emergency of the parasite were carried out. The plants were harvested 87 days after transplanting, measuring fresh weight of aerial part, roots, fruits in parasitized and non parasitized plants, plus broomrape weight. The detrimental effect produced by the parasite growth, was expresed in first place over the flower and fruit production, and in a lesser degree in foliage development. The O. ramosa emergency was observed at 50 days after transplanting, moment in which flower production in eggplant had be iniciated. Carbohydrates and water competition between the plant and parasite gave place to a high flower abortion and a reduced number of small fruits. In both cultivars, 75% of the host-parasite complex fresh weight was due to Orobanche ramosa, and 87% in the case of dry matter
