Development of soil chemistry in beech, mixed and spruce stands in the Giant Mts

Changes in soil chemistry in the Giant Mts in 1983 - 1993 are presented. Research was conducted in a set of 35 permanent research plots of the Opocno Research Station affiliated to the Forestry and Game Management Research Institute; the set of the plots represented on-site and air pollution conditions in the region concerned. The following pedochemical chracteristics were determined in the main mineral horizons pHH2O, pHKCL, base content, hydrolytic acidity, cation exchange capacity, base saturation of sorption complex, total carbon and nitrogen content by Springer - Klee method and macroelement content in 1% citric acid extract. The soil profiles show signs of previous acidification - a decrease in base content and base saturation of sorption complex, on the other hand a trend of soil revitalization has been observed recently: increases in pH and Ca and Mg contents in the top soil horizonts. The soil state also depends upon on-site conditions and on the species composition of stands, better soil chemistry has been documented in mixed and beech stands. The development of Giant Mts forest soils requires to conduct more detailed research.
