The relationship between stolon characteristics, total nonstructural carbohydrates, winter survival and spring yield of white clover in Sweden

The objective of the present work was to analyse the effect of various stolon characteristics on overwintering and spring yield of a selected number of white clover cultivars of different geographical origins in an environment with long and cold winters. A field experiment was established in 1992 and data collected during autumn and spring in 1993/94. Sowing rates were 6 kg ha (-1) of white clover + 14 kg ha (-1) meadow fescue. White clover cultivars were Sandra and Undrom (Sweden), AberCrest, AberHerald and S 184 (UK), Milo (DK) and Grasslands Huia (NZ). Milo, Undrom and S 184 had the highest spring yields, while Huia had the poorest. The principal component analysis explained 51 per cent of the total variance in the data set. Two components were distinguished. The first was dominated by total nonstructural carbohydrate levels, clover yield in spring and the relative changes in stolon mass and growing point numbers from autumn and spring. The second principal component was dominated by the number of growing points per unit area
