Sowing rates and productive tillering of barley in connection with yield and quality

Structural elements of yield are: number of productive tillers, number of seeds per ear and 1000 kernel weight. Yield is often in positive correlation with one and in negative correlation with another structural element. Variety and sowing rate have also essential roles. Our trials have shown that in favourable growing conditions differences in yields of medium-late barley varieties are very small in case of sowing rates of 300, 500 or 700 germinatiang seeds per square m. Although for higher sowing rates 2-3 times more seed is used, the number of productive tillers on the average increases only 1,2-1,3 times. Simultaneously quality of yield declines - decreases 1000 kernel weight, depending on the uniformity of kernels and number of seeds per ear. Sowing rate 500 germinating seeds per square m is recommended for medium-late varieties whereas yield potential of numeral seeds will be not realised for different reasons
