Crude protein contents and yields of north American and Estonian lucerne varieties
1995
Bender, A. | Aavola, R. (Jogeva Plant Breeding Inst., Jogeva (Estonia))
A trial, including 30 lucerne (Medicago sativa L.) varieties from North America and 2 hybrid lucerne varieties from Estonia was established in 1993. The varieties from North America had higher crude protein content in the first cut, the varieties from Estonia in the second and third cuts during the first year of utilisation. 50-60 % of the protein content of the Estonian varieties was received from the first cut, 30-35 % from the second and ca. 10 % from the third cuts. The ratio of the varieties from North America was 40-50 %, 30-40 % and 15-20 %, respectively. Following varieties exceeded the check variety 'Jogeva 118' in crude protein yield and are of interest in further breeding work: 'Karlu' (Estonia, Jogeva) - 38,8 per cent, 'Oac Minto' (Canada, Ontario) - 29,9 %, 'Peace' (Canada, Alberta) - 27,0 %, 'Caribou' (Canada, Ontario) - 13,2 %, 'Algonquin' (Canada, Ontario) - 6,3 %, 'Denali' (USA, Alaska) - 6,1 % and 'Alouette' (Canada, Quebec and Ontario) - 3,8 %
