Two white grained rice varieties, AWGU-DWARF and a tall variety of similar origin, IJ-86W, selected from the germplasm of peasant agriculture were investigated for the genetic basis of the dwarf character state. The biological basis of dwarfness is the reduction in the length of all internodes except the uppermost. This character is closely linked with the gene of dwarfness. Reciprocal F1 plants between AWGU-DWARF and IJ-86W were tall, indicating dominance of the tall character. 665 F2 plants were scored and the ration fitted a 3 tall:1 dwarf ratio expected on the basis of dwarfness being a monogenic recessive trait. The result was validated by F3 ratios from a random population of F2 talls which fitted a 1 non segregating : 2 segregating ratio
