An alternative pathway of in vitro organogenesis in higher plants: Plant regeneration via decapitated hypocotyls in three solanaceous vegetable genera

Without any exogenous application of plant growth regulators, an in vitro plant regeneration mechanism was observed with the decapitated seedlings of three genera belonging to the Solanaceae family, i.e. tomato, eggplant and Capsicum species. 5-30 days after the decapitation of 6-18-day-old plantlets germinated under sterile conditions on hormone-free MS (1962) medium, the hypocotyl cut surfaces displayed a dark green regeneration zone. Although each tomato, eggplant and C. baccatum genotype decapitated at the hypocotyl at the age of one week displayed a regeneration zone, differences were found between the genotypes. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) examination of the regeneration zone formed after the eggplant seedling decapitation was proof of shoot organogenesis.
