Ascochyta pisi, a component of the Ascochyta disease complex, frequently causes losses to the vining pea industries. To determine the races present in Hungary, several isolates were obtained from diseased plants collected in different locations throughout the country. To test reaction of pea genotypes to the fungus three inoculation methods were compared. Inoculating pre-germinated pea seeds with a heavy spore suspension of Ascochyta pisi the reaction of genotypes can be determined precisely and the results are consistent. Nearly all of the Hungarian isolates were classified as race "C" according to Hubbeling (1972) with 2 exceptions which were classified as race "D". From the screening of a wide range of cultivated pea varieties only Rovar, Regis, Eldo and Venlona II proved to be a resistant, representing potentially very useful sources of resistance with typical hypersensitive reactions. All the cultivars in production are very susceptible. In the crosses of resistant Regis and Rovar with susceptible varieties, the resistance to Ascochyta pisi race "C" seems to be controlled by a single dominant gene
