In the first part of the paper, based on German data, author gives an overview on purchasing and consumer prices and on profitability of the meat sector in the European Union. The functioning of the import levy and export promotion systems is also discussed. In the next part, data of the meat and poultry consumption, including the perspectives, are treated. The analysis of the main tendencies helps the exporters in developing their market strategy for the Western European countries
