Effect of varietal difference and application of deblossoming treatment on yield and fruit quality of everbearing type strawberries [Fragaria ananassa] grown in the cooler region of Japan

Five varieties of day-neutral or overbearing strawberries recently introduced were grown under a plastic rain shelter at Morioka, in the cooler region of Japan. All the five varieties produced fruits continuously from early-June to mid-December in the second year. The total yield in the second year ranged from 2.9 to 5.7 t/10a, and three periods characterized by a high production were observed. The expression of the continuous flowering trait varied with the varieties, and this varietal difference was considered to affect the cropping pattern and plant vigor. The fruit size changed considerably with the seasons; the fruits in summer were small and over half of them were unmarketable. Furthermore, varietal differences in fruit size were also observed and the fruits of cv. "Summerberry" were the largest among the five varieties. Deblossoming treatment applied to cv. "Everberry" plants from spring to summer resulted in the decrease of the total yield but increase of the summer yield, and tended to improve the fruit characteristics in summer and fall. Deblossoming treatment applied from early spring to June 1 was considered to excert a beneficial effect because the yield and fruit characteristics were markedly improved in the July crop
