Growth of jack mackerel, Trachurus japonicus, in the coastal waters along Niigata in the Japan Sea, was determined from the relationship between their age and fork length, using the otoliths of the specimens collected in the spawning seasons of 1991, 1992 and 1993. No significant difference was found between male and female for the radius of otolith annuli. The growth rate was less than those of the other groups reported from the northern and central East China Sea. Possible explanation for the difference in their growth patterns was proposed
