Changes in phytoplankton community structure in the two different hydrological conditions of semi-enclosed Chinhae bay, Korea

In order to closely examine the change in phytoplankton community structure in different ecosystems, two different locations in semi-enclosed Chinhae Bay, Korea were chosen. Water samples from several depths were collected weekly during the course of thermocline development in spring from 7 March to 21 April 1989. Vernal phytoplankton blooms occurred twice in Masan waters (Station M) and once in Chilchundo water (Station C) during the study period. Nutrient concentration and chlorophyll alpha content at Station M were higher by one order of magnitude than at Station C. Observed changes in phytoplankton community structure and abundance at both stations could be interpreted in terms of the time course of observed nutrient dynamics in a resident water column: 1) combinations of continuous P-limitation and silicate depletion in the surface layer due to a diatom bloom at Station M, 2) after the first bloom occurred, changing from N-limitation to P-limitation and the restriction of an upward flux of nutrients to the upper layer at Station C. These changes were responsible for the shift of dominant phytoplankton during the study periods
