[Vegetation in Republic of Moldova]
1995
Postolache, Gh.
The natural vegetation of Moldova was formed under the influence of three regions of the European continent: the European one of deciduous forests, the submediterranean one of forests and the Euroasiatic one of the steppe. The forests are spread on the highest hypsometric levels (200-400 m) and are present only with deciduous species. The forests from the North of Moldova differ from the ones in the center both by their floristic composition and the synusial structure. The investigation of soils showed that in the past the steppes ocuppied the greatest part of the territory of Moldova. At present the whole surface of the herbaceous vegetation makes up 343 thousand ha (10,2 ). They are communities of subdesert vegetation in the southern extremity of Moldova while pratosteppe communities are represented in the North of republic. The waterside vegetation includes two subtypes: the waterside vegetation of the flooded valleys of the rivers and waterside vegetation of the unflooded valleys. The situation of the natural vegetation protection cannot be considered satisfactory. That is why new sectors with precious vegetation are proposed to be taken under the protection of the state.
