Tapping systems and yield stimulation in rubber

A study was conducted at the Philippine Industrial Crops Research Inst., USM, Kabacan, Cotabato [Philippines] from Sep 1992 to Jul 1994 aimed at comparing the effectivity of unconventional to conventional tapping without stimulation and with stimulation, determining which tapping systems can sustain high yield, and the effect of these various tapping systems on the growth of rubber trees. One hundred trees were tapped for every tapping system. Fifty trees were stimulated with 2.5 percent ethephon and the other fifty trees were not stimulated. The conventional downward tapping, 1/2 S d/2 and the unconventional upward tapping, 1/2 S d/2 when used on stimulated trees increase latex yield. However, the percentage yield was lower in the second year of tapping. Stimulation with 2.5 percent ethephon applied either 10 or 4 times a year lowers the dry rubber content of the latex in all tapping systems. Stimulated trees tapped at either conventional upward tapping, 1/2 S d/2 or the unconventional change-over downward tapping, 2 x 1/2 S d/2 (2 x 2 d/4) decreased the stem girth of rubber trees
