Isozyme variation and geographic distribution of mungbean, Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek

The extent of variability available in the 719 strains of mungbean collected from 36 different countries, with geographic distribution and the center of diversity of the two isozymes SDH and Lap were determined by means of polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Four types and two types of banding patterns were detected in the SDH and Lap, respectively, while seven different SDH and Lap combinations were observed in the collection. Based on the results, the Asian continent can be classified into two major groups namely: 1.) East Asia and South East Asia with SDH type 2 and Lap type 2 predominating and 2.) South Asia and West Asia characterized by the predominance of SDH type 1 and Lap type 1. India was designated as the center of genetic diversity based on the greater variation in the combined phenotypes observed among its strains compared to the other countries. Two probably pathways of mungbean dispersal were deduced using the frequency of distribution of the combined occurrence of the two enzymes
