Mites associated with Apid mellifera Linn. and Apis cerana Fabr.

Twenty-four species of mites associated with honeybees, Apis mellifera Linn, and Apis cerana Fabr. in the Southern Tagalog region [Philippines] were taxonomically treated in this study. These are classified under 16 families and 3 suborders of the Acari. Taxonomic keys, diagnostic descriptions and illustrations, geographic distribution and other biological information are also provided. Except for the well known bee parasites, Varroa jacobsoni Oudemans, and Tropilaelaps clareae Delfinado and Baker, are all recorded for the first time as bee asssociates in the Philippines. An acarid, Forcellinia faini Delfinado and Baker and a glyciphagid, Austroglycyphagus thailandicus Fain and Farson are new species records for the Philippines. The most abundant species were scavengers particularly the uropodid, Trichouropoda stercoraria Hirschmann and Hiramatsu and the acarid, F. faini. Other species found in abundance were Tarsonemus sp. of uncertain feeding habits, Blattisocius sp., a predator and Neocypholaelaps sp., a pollen feeder. The rest of the species were encountered only rarely and in few numbers including the bee parasites, V. jacobsini and T. clareae.
