Correlation of molecular diversity with heterosis in nine lowland rice

Analysis of variance revealed that the nine varieties differed significantly in 12 traits but were similar in yielding abilities and percent unproductive tillers. Midparent heterosis was significant in all traits except total number of tillers, number of panicles per plant and percent unproductive tillers. Midparent heterosis was highest in grain yield (10 percent) and total number of grains per plant (22 percent). General and specific combining abilities were found to be significant in all 14 traits examined. In terms of grain yield, the best combiners were PSB Rc-6 and BPI 76 (NS) while the poorest were IR56, IR64, PSB Rc-4, and IR72 which exhibited negative GCA effects. Significant correlation was observed between molecular diversity and the midparent heterosis for total number of grains, and grain traits (r =0.3 - 0.5). Relationship of RAPD [random amplified polymorphic DNA] marker polymorphism for yield (per plant) are very low and insignificant. This study indicates possible application of simple molecular techniques like RAPD in predicting heterosis based on RAPD marker polymorphism
