Heredity, age, obesity, sedentary life style, diet and sex are the major contributing factors to the development diabetes mellitus. Socio-economic status, hypertension and various stresses are also playing a role in the incidence of the disease. Diabetes occurs more in the offspring of diabetic parents than the offspring of non-diabetic parents. The incidence of the disease increases with age. Obesity increases the severity of impaired hormone action. Degree and duration of obesity, and specific distribution of excess body fat are associated with the development of non insulin-dependent diabetes. Sedentary life style results in obesity which is a causative factor for development of the disease. Exercise helps in decreasing blood glucose and increasing insulin sensitivity in diabetic individuals. The prevalence of diabetes is higher in female than male. Socio economic status do have some link with diabetes. Hypertension may have an indirect relationship with diabetes.
