Effect of salinity and waterlogging interaction on calcium and magnesium concentration in wheat

A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of different moisture and salinity levels on Ca and Mg concentration in wheat (LU26S) leaves. Moisture levels were 20, 40, 60 and 100 percent of the saturation percentage and salinity levels were; control (2.7), 10, 20 and 30 dS m-1. It was observed that progressive increase in Ca content of second top leaf existed with increasing levels of salinity at mean as well as at individual moisture levels. Maximum Mg concentration was recorded at 30 dS m-l salinity and at 20 percent moisture. Behaviour of Mg was similar to Ca except at 20 percent moisture. However, higher mean Mg concentration was noted at 100 percent moisture regime which is significant at 20 and 40 percent. Contrary results were obtained when Ca+Mg/Na ratio was taken into account. The ratio was found maximum in control for salinity and at 60 percent moisture regime, giving a conclusion that less salts and relatively more moisture (upto 60%) are responsible to keep this ratio good. Higher salts and moisture more than 60 percent of saturation percentage (waterlogged condition) are conducive to disturb this ratio and resultantly more Na may be taken in comparison to Ca+Mg.
