Morphology and cytogenetics of Solanum melongena, Solanum aethiopicum and their F1 hybrid

Solanum melongena and S. aethiopicum are significantly different morphologically from each other in terms of growth habit, petiole color, flower/corolla color and fruit characteristics. The F1 plants, on the other hand, are similar to S. aethiopicum in growth habit and fruit shape and color at immature stage and to S. melongena in petiole color and fruit position. The F1 seeds were very few compared to the numerous seeds of both parents. The chromosome number of the parents and the F1 hybrids is 2n=24. Normal bivalent formation was noted in the parents while a moderate pairing (67.16 percent) was exhibited by the F1's. Univalents, trivalents, quadrivalents, and rings of four were noted in the F1's. The chromosome association observed in the hybrids indicate that most of the parental chromosomes are homologous. Others are partially homologous and interchange of small chromosomal segments between the ancestors of the two parental races are indicated. The chromosome behavior at meiosis 1 of the two parents was generally normal while the F1's showed Laggards, bridges and bridges plus fragments. The observed bridges and fragments suggests that pericentric inversion may have occurred. Pollen fertility of the parents ranged from 77.37-78.3 percent while the F1 has only 9.74 percent
