Microbial analysis of selected herbal drugs

Ten selected herbal drugs intended for oral use in humans were evaluated to determine the presence of any microbial contamination and to identify the contaminating microorganisms. Results revealed six of the ten herbal drugs, all locally processed, were contaminated with bacteria. No imported sample was contaminated. Samples packed in ordinary plastic bags carried higher number of contaminants than those packed in bottles. Contamination was not correlated with either pH or moisture content of the herbal drugs. Of the 160 randomly selected bacterial contaminants obtained from the different selective media plated with the different samples, 120 were sporeformers identified as belonging to the genus Bacillus, 20 were filamentous bacteria and 20 were of the family Enterobacteriaceae consisting of 18 Enterobacter sp. and two Escherichia coli isolates. There were no fungal contaminants detected from any of the samples
