Interrelationships and path coefficients for some quantitative characters in soybean

Sixteen soybean cultivars were tested for plant height, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, 1000-seed weight and seed yield per plant. It was also attempted to estimate phenotypic and genotypic association between the characters and their direct and indirect effects on seed yield. Significant variation existed in these plant characters. Plant height, number of pods per plant and number of seeds per plant were positively associated with seed yield. But there was no association between seed yield and seed size. Number of seeds per plant was major component of seed yield. Selection for higher seed yield in soybean may be effective by choosing plants with more number of seeds coupled with greater height and number of pods.
