Path coefficient analysis in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum)

Path coefficient analysis was performed in 25 F4 genies derived from crosses between B97 (NIAB), HT/23, Express, B557, Rode Okra and AUH37 in various combinations. Boll number had significant negative association with staple length and positive association with seed index and seed cotton yield. Lint percentage was negatively correlated with staple length, seed and lint indices. Staple length was positively related with seed index and negatively with seed cotton yield whereas seed index had positive association with lint index. Order of traits according to the magnitude of their direct positive effects on seed cotton yield was boll number, seed index, lint percentage and boll weight whereas lint index had negative direct effect. It is suggested that selection should be based upon higher number of bolls with higher seed index and an optimistic compromise of staple length.
