Increasing water use efficiency through fallow soil management under central Anatolian conditions

Research has shown that in most parts of Central Anatolia water must be conserved during the fallow period through an appropriate soil management system, in order to stabilize cereal production against scarce and unpredictable precipitation. Experiments carried out on the timing, frequency and depth of tillage, and on the most effective tillage implements, established that the best system was initial tillage in early spring as soon as the soil was ready, with a moldboard plough at a depth of 18-20 cm, followed by several tillages, depending on crust formation and weed density, with sweep + harrow at a depth of 8-10 cm. A six-year series of trials compared different soil management systems; stubble mulch, modified stubble mulch, soil mulch and modified soil mulch; and it was concluded that soil was the most effective system
