The role of induced mutations for chickpea improvement [Cicer arietinum, Pakistan]

Induced mutations were used to insolate chickpea mutants with improved plant type and disease resistance. In view of its most important grain legume crop of Pakistan and most practical means of solving the protein malnutrition problems, a large number of such mutants were selected and evaluated. Ascochyta blight resistance was induced and confirmed over several generations. One blight resistant mutant variety, "CM72", was released for general cultivation and another one is a candidate variety, while some others are under evaluation tests. All these mutants were used in cross breeding. The significance of induced mutations as a valuable supplementary approach for chickpea improvement and some of the salient results obtained through their use is discussed
