Cytogenetic and morphological study of alloplasmic lines of cultivar Novosibirskaya 67

Alloplasmic lines BC9 with cytoplasm from winter rye were created on the basis of a recurrent parent, i.e., a pure line of the spring cultivar Novosibirskaya 67 (Triticum aewstivum L.) and cytoplasm donors, i.e., Secalotriticum. All plants F1 BC9 analyzed had 2n equal to 42. Plants with additions (2n=43 and 2n=44) were revealed in F2. The plants with 2n=44 maintained the same chromosome number up to F6, and they were characterized by higher productivity than 2n=42 plants. In some lines with 42 and 44 chromosomes we observed a pair of microchromosomes whose presence was accompained by an increase in grain number per ear and by more regular meiosis. The role of cytoplasm in the hybrid origin of species whose chromosome number is not a multiple of that of the parents, is discussed
