Influence of exopolysaccharides from Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viceae on formation and efficiency of pea symbiosis with homologous nodule bacteria

The role of exopolysaccharides (EPS) from Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viceae in the formation of an efficient symbiosis was studied. It was shown that addition of EPS from less virulent strains 11 and 31 to the cells of a high-virulent strain 248b washed from its own exopolysaccharides reduced its nodulating activity by 25 %. Conversely, addition of EPS from more virulent strains 11 and 248b to the cells of the less virulent strain 31 increased the number of nodules on the plant host roots by 56 - 100 % and their nitrogen-fixing activity by 25 - 33 %. Under the influence of EPS from any other homologous strain protein content in pea crop was increased by 5 - 43 % depending upon the inoculant strain and the strain synthetizing EPS. The ability of exopolysaccharides from nodule bacteria of pea (strains 11, 248b) and food bean (strains 87, 97) to form inactive nodules on pea roots without microsymbiont participation was found. Nodulation-including activity of EPS correlated with the virulence and competitiveness of corresponding producer strains. The data obtained indicate that rhizobial EPSs play an important role not only during early stages of the infection process (recognition, adhesion) but also in the realization of the nodule bacterium symbiotic potential
