The growth of some green algae (Scenedesmus, Chlorella, Botryococcus, Ulva): Physiology and biochemistry

In this paper are presented the results of studying the evolution of some green algae grown in different types of bioreactors in order to obtain large quantities of biomass. The genera Chlorella and Scenedesmus were found to be more active in the bioreactor with air injection into the algal suspension. In the case of Botryococcus braunii, photosynthetic activity and biomass accumulation increased with immobilisation of cells in the alginate. Concerning the economic importance of the algae tested, it was concluded that Botrycoccus has a lower proteinaceous and glucosidic content in the cell-lines with many hydrocarbons. Besides determining certain doses and the optimum N/P relations, the role of some microelements (Al, Zn, Cu, Ni) was correlated to the process of algal growth and development. The culture of Ulva rigida on solid media has shown the ombrophylus character of this species under the conditions of natural and fluorescent light and mineral and organic nutrition (1. optimum development under 10000 lx., 2. optimum development in folded explants, 3. a slight tendency of immersion in a solid agar medium of explants).
