Chlorococcal algae in the phytoplankton of the Hungarian section of the River Danube in the early nineties

The Danube is one of the most studied large, eutrophic rivers in Europe. This paper presents a short characterisation of the biological water quality based on data from the period 1990-1992, collected in the Hungarian section of the Danube. Variations in the hydrometeorological features are the most important determining factors for the actual trophic level of the Danube. There is a good correlation between chlorophyll-a content and discharge from early spring to autumn. Our figures present a definite increase in the quality of algae along the Hungarian section and a 10-15 times increase in the algal number is not rare. The density and species number of the coccal green algae starts to increase at the end of April and is at its highest from June to October. The taxonomic notes refer to the most common green algae of the phytoplankton as well as to some of the rare species.
