Green algae may contribute to waste treatment efficiency directly by their metabolic activity, especially in tertiary treatment processes. Planktonic types are often abundant in stabilisation systems whereas attached forms occur frequently in different biofilm reactors. Results of model experiments in the bioelimination of nutrients and priority pollutants, applicable as the tertiary waste treatment technology in catchment areas of drinking water resources, are pointed out. Attached filamentous green algae growing in waste treatment plant effluents may serve as indicators of the purification efficiency, as documented by the saprobiological evaluation of periphyton samples from 2 different localities. For the classification of waste treatment plant effluents as point sources of eutrophication of receiving surface waters, bioassays using green algae as test-organisms should be recommended. Several examples of such effluent classification from the catchment basin of the drinking water Zelivka Reservoir are presented.
