Amino acid sequence alignment of microbial, plant and animal alpha-amylases: Some evolutionary implications

The amino acid sequences of bacterial, fungal, plant, insect and mammalian alpha-amylases with mutually low degrees of similarity were aligned in order to draw their evolutionary relationships. An unrooted distance tree of the alpha-amylases constructed upon this alignment reflected the probable long divergence of the respective living systems such as fungi, plants and animals, with the existing exceptions. Based on the presence of several sequence features characteristic of cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase, the "alpha-amylase" from Clostridium thermosulfurogenes was proposed to be re-classified as a cyclodextrin glycosyltransferase.
