The influence of acidification on some chemical and microbiological properties of soil determining plant viability

The degradation of plant communities in the course of increasing soil acidity was investigated along a transect. Attention was paid to causes of decreased number of species. Low pH values of soil solution resulted in leaching out of nutrients (Ca, Mg, K) and an increase of AL3+ concentration. Increased amounts of aluminium found in the tissues of above-ground plant parts are probably the main cause of their destruction and/or dying-off. The changes in physical and chemical properties reduced soil microbial activity, resulting in the reduction of cellulose decomposition. The micromycetes genera such as Chaetomium, Trichoderma, Penicillium and Curvularia were shown to be relatively tolerant.
