Non-tillage rejuvenation of ruderal grassland by reseeding. 1. Changes in soil

Over 3 years, changes in soil of extremly eutrophicated stand were observed after simple mixtures reseeding and without reseeding. The results were compared with the changes in semi-natural grassland. Eutrophization under the influence of an excessive amount of manure after long-term folding caused the soil to alkalize and created extremely high concentrations of nitrogen (N) and potassium (K). For ruderal grassland rejuvenation by reseeding the best results were observed in variant with the competitively strong and nitrophilic species Dactylis glomerata. In the course of the following years, the soil environment began to acidize slightly. Radical decrease of both total and mineral N concentration caused a significant reduction in humus content. The C:N ratio became optimal for grassland. In addition, the supply of phosphorus (P) in the soil decreased, but the concentration of superflous K decreased extensively. The reduction in soil nutrient concentration after grassland rejuvenation by reseeding, and subsequent 4-time cutting of above-ground biomass without subsequent fertilization, caused the eutrophicated nutritive soil regime to be modified to mesotrophic. At the same time, stand conditions changed, approaching the original stand of semi-natural grassland characteristic of the strong acidic soil reaction and moderate N and P supply typical for turf soils.
