Histological structure of muscles in selected types of heifers

The histological structure of caput longum mi. tricipitis brachii (M.T.B.) and musculus longissimus thoracis (M.L.T.) of different types of heifers were observed. The investigations were carried out in Improved Slovak Pied heifers (ZS), Slovak Pied cattle (S=Simmental), cross-breds ZS by Limousine (ZSxLi) and crossbreds of ZS by Blonde d'Aquitaine (ZSxBa). Histological analysis was done at the age of 450 days. A significantly higher proportion of white muscle fibres was observed in both muscles of crossbreds SZxBa (47.82 % and 45.64 %). Crossbreds LixZs had a higher content of red muscle fiber (M.L.T. 46.65 %). There were no significant differences in the fibre diameter of genotypes. The fibre diameter for white muscle types was from 78.65 micro m (ZSxBa) to 80.94 micro m (ZS). The same tendency was also found in the diameter of red muscle fibre type (from 55. 83 micro m ZSxBa to 59.52 micro m ZS).
