Root formation and growth in young maize plants. Pt.1: Dynamics of lateral roots primordia formation and their emergence in individual morphological types of the roots

The succession of the emergence of individual morphological types of maize root (Zea mays cv. CE 330) was determined. The roots grew out in sequence: RPS (radix primaria seminalis), RASs (radices adventivae seminales), RANs (radices adventivae nodales), RAMs (radices adventivae mesocotyles). In the cultivar of maize used, 2-4 RASs and 3-6 RANs grew out of the 1st whorl. The existence and number of RAMs was variable. The individual morphological types of root branched in the same order as they appeared in germination. The start of branching corresponded more with the reaching of a definite length of parent root than with the age of the plant. For RPS, RASs and RANs this was a length near 40 mm. The number of differentiated primordia in the early phase of root development first increased, then after the start of emergence rapidly declined. Later the number of primordia slowly increased again. The number of emerged laterals depends on the total length of the parent root in all types of root, confirmed by high correlative coefficients (r = and more than 0.9). The length of the unbranched section of roots after emergence of laterals shortened and in 23 day-old plants this length was nearly the same in all morphological types of maize roots.
