Effects of harvesting time on yield and grain quality of soybean varieties grown after rice

Study on effects of harvesting time on yield and grain quality of dry season soybeans was conducted in farmer's field at San Pa Sak village, Hang Dong District, Chiang Mai during January to June, 1987. The varieties studied were SJ 1, SJ 2, SJ 4, SJ 5 and OCB. The harvesting time treatments were 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 weeks after full bloom stage or R2 stage (according to Fehr and Caviness, 1980). Harvesting time significantly affected yield and grain quality of all soybean varieties. The optimum harvesting time for SJ 1, SJ 2, SJ 4 and SJ 5 was around 8 weeks after full bloom stage (98 days after emergence) whereas for OCB it was around 6-7 weeks after full bloom stage (77-84 days after emergence). Early and late harvests caused a marked reduction of grain yield and quality of all varieties. Early harvest resulted in high number of immature pod, high number of wrinkled seed, high number of green seed as well as low seed weight whereas late harvest resulted in high number of shatter pod and high number of damaged seed.
