Some factors affecting the adoption of farmer's compost making and application in Amphoe Taphan Hin, Changwat Phichit

All 100 farmers adopted the compost making and application. About 90 % of them used rice straw from their own field for making compost, 78 % used cow and buffalo dung which were received for and bought from their neighbours and 65 % of them used the chemical fertilizer. Besides, 59 % of them used compost activator which was distributed by the officials, 99 % watering the compost piles by the water from natural sources. The average number of family members to make compost was 2.66 persons and few of them got their neighbour's help. For the compost pile making method, 68 % of them piled the compost in the wooden structure as recommended and 90 % made the compost pile in their housing area. For their problems, only few of them were facing problems of water (8 %), labourers (5 %), animal dung (5 %), compost activator (4 %) and crop residue (2 %), however, the farmers could solve their own problems. 93 % of the studied farmers expected to continue making compost because it reduced the cost of input (46 %) and improved the produce quality (45 %). In case of compost activator, 69 % of them thought that they could buy it themselves. The hypotheses were proved that there were relationships between number of family labour, communication with the officials and the knowledge of compost making and application, but none with their age, agricultural area and agricultural machine. Besides, there were relationships between communication with the officials, agricultural machine and the adoption of compost making and application, but none with their age, agricultural area and number of family labour.
