Differential impact of modern rice technology on income structure and income distribution of farmers under favorable and unfavorable production environments in Thailand, 1987-88 crop year

Factors affecting income in Changwat Suphan Buri; the modern and improved rice variety area, cultivated area, age dummy, education dummy and farm asset was positively and significantly affected rice income. The factors positively affecting non-rice income were irrigation dummy and share-tenant dummy. For non-farm income, the irrigation dummy, cultivated area and age dummy negatively affected while education dummy positively and significantly affected non-farm income. Factors affecting income in Changwat Khon Kaen; irrigation dummy, farm asset, cultivated area, modern and improved rice-variety area positively affected while the leasehold dummy negatively and significantly affected rice income. For factors affecting non-rice income; share-tenant dummy and leasehold dummy negatively affected non-rice income while cultivated area positively and significantly affected non-rice income. Family labor force positively while modern and improved rice-variety area negatively affected non-farm income. Farmers in favorable area who used more modern rice technology had higher total costs but they had also higher returns than unfavorable area farmers. In the wet season, farmers in irrigated area, non-irrigated area and flooded area of Changwat Suphan Buri had returns of 632.34, 107.87 and 35.89 Baht per rai, respectively and Changwat Khon Kaen, they had returns of 386.11, 125.38 and 18.48 Baht per rai, respectively. In the dry season, returns of 987.45, 865.08 and 397.52 Baht per rai were achieved by farmers in irrigated area and flooded area of Changwat Suphan Buri, irrigated area of Changwat Khon kaen, respectively.
