Preliminary screening of mulberry varieties for resistance to thrips, Pseudodendrothrips mori (Niwa)
1991
Chirasak Petmesri
Preliminary screening of 36 mulberry varieties was carried out in 1988 in Nakhonratchasima Sericultural Research Center for thrips, Pseudodendrothrips mori N. resistance. The number of nymph and adult thrips on mulberry were checked every 7 days interval. Fifteen varieties with the number of thrips less than 200 were selected. After 3-4 months of planting in the field, the symptoms of thrip damage were evaluated. Comparison of yield and degree of rating of thrip injury were undertaken, and Nakhonratchasima 60, Som Yai and Khun Pei were found to be resistant to thrips. The rating of thrip injury from low to high of the first three highest resistant plants were Nakhonratchasima 60, Khun Pei and Harng Plalod respectively. The leaf yield of Nakhonratchasima 60 was higher than those of the other varieties and the yields from infested and non infested plots were not significantly different. Other varieties also showed low thrips injury level and possessed several good traits that can be promoted as potential breeding materials for further varietal improvement.
