Nutritive value of banana meal and banana peeling meal in quail and broiler rations

Two experimental trials to evaluate the nutritive value of banana meal and banana peeling meal in quail and broiler rations were conducted using one-day-old birds. In experiment 1 the quail ration was fed to 750 birds for four weeks and in experiment 2 the broiler ration was given to 360 chicks for seven weeks in battery cages. Feed and water were given ad libitum. Body weight, feed consumption, mortality rate and carcass quality were evaluated. The nutritive composition of banana meal and banana peeling meal was determined. Incorporation of 10 %, 15 %, 20 % and 25 % banana meal as well as 5 %, 10 % and 15 % banana peeling meal in the quail ration did not give significantly different body weight but significantly poorer feed conversion from the birds fed on corn (P0.01). Supplemention of 0.2 % methionine in the ration containing respectively 25 % banana meal and 15 % banana peeling meal gave good effects on growth and feed conversion of quails during the period of 0-2 weeks (P0.01) and during the period of 0-4 weeks it also showed good trend on growth and feed conversion. In the broiler experiment, use banana meal (15 %, 20 %, 25 %, 35 %) and banana peeling meal (5 %, 10 %, 15 %) as sources of carbohydrate compared with corn showed poor result on growth and feed conversion (P0.01). Supplemention of 0.2 % methionine in the ration containing 35 % banana meal showed good effects on growth.
