Effect of vitamin B1 on the growth of seabass fingerling, Lates calcarifer Bloch

Quantitative requirements and deficiency symptoms of thiamine were studied in seabass fingerling, Lates calcarifer Bloch, with initial weights of 1.40-1.52 grams, in the levels of 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10, and 20 mg/100 g dry diet in seawater. After 12 weeks the average final weights'were: 60.71, 61.95, 60.06, 66.46, 64.56 end 64.78 grams, the feed conversion efficiency: 66, 64, 64, 64, 65 and 65 % and the survival rates: 97.66, 100, 97.66, 97.66, 98.66 and 97.66 % respectively. No statistically singnificant differences were found. After week 2 some fishes, in all the treatments, developed dark coloration on bodies, dorsal fins and tails, The number of affected fishes gradually increased up to 40-50 % of the total number of fishes in each treatment by the end of the 12 weeks experiment. Dark coloration might not be due to thiamine deficiency. The result from the 12 weeks rearing experiment, with 0-20 mg supplementary thiamine/100 g. diet could not show the distinct quantitative requirement of thiamine for seabass fingerling. This might be due to the low thiamine requirement for seabass and the thiamine present in the practical ingredient. Therefore, semipurified diet might be required for the study on thiamine requirement of seabass.
