Laying duck production in Amphoe Banglen, Changwat Nakhon Pathom [Thailand] and the producers' needs for technology

All farmers raised Khaki Cambell-native cross bred ducks. Most of them bought their breeding ducks in laying stage from middle men in Amphoe Banglen. The average farm size was 4,519.47 ducks/farm and the average farm production was 2,785.42 eggs/day. Most farmers had their duck confinements adjoining to their houses, raised their ducks on ground floor and the ducks were allowed to a pond occasionally. The average pen size was 20.77 square m/100 ducks. All farmers fed their ducks with mixed feed which composed of coarse rice bran, broken rice and concentrate feed. Most of them changed feed formulation according to production stages but not to material price situation, did not use hatcher to hatch duckling and did not use bedding, did not carry out farm records and did not forbid a foreigner to enter their farms. Half of them did not destroy the duck carcass that died by disease. Average degree of needs for technology as rated by the farmers was in 'some' level. The degree of needs was high in feeding and general management practicing. The producers' needs for technology were not significantly affected by sex, age, education background, occupation, farm size and farming experience.
