Effects of some cotton-plant substances in artificial diet on the growth and development of the American bollworm, Heliothis armigera (Hubner)

Three cotton-plant substances were separately incorporated into the artificial diet of the American bollworm, Heliothis armigera (Hubner), to determine their effects on larval growth and other developments. Gossypol acetic acid was found to be more toxic than both rutin and quercetin. None of the larvae reached the pupal stage when the concentration of gossypol acetic acid in the diet is 0.3 % and above, yet at 0.1-0.3 % concentrations, it prolonged the larval period of the insects. Rutin was found to be less toxic to H. armigera than gossypol acetic acid and quercetin. It had no effect on the larval period, percentage of pupation and adult emergence at the concentrations tested. Quercetin had also no effect on the percentage of pupation and adult emergence at the concentrations tested. However, an increment of quercetin concentration resulted in increasing in the larval period of H. armigera. None of tested compounds affected the pupal weight of the insects. The ED50 values of gossypol acetic acid, rutin, and quercetin were 0.10 %, 1.09 % and 0.07 %; respectively.
