Effect of intercropping on growth and yield of sugarcane varieties Q 83 and F 140

Both trials were arranged in a split-plot design with four replications with two sugarcane varieties, Q 83 and F 140 as main plots. Intercrops in first experiment were sweet corn, baby corn, mungbean, tomato and Chinese radish and in the second experiment were sweet corn, baby corn, mungbean, groundnut and sesame. All these field crops were planted as both intercrops and monoculture in the subplots. Late rainy season experiment showed that heights of intercrops were not affected when grown together with two varieties of sugarcane. Growth, number of shoot per stool, yield, yield components and CCS of two sugacane varieties were not affected when grown intercrops as compared to monoculture. Highest income was obtained from tomato with Q 83 and F 140 sugarcane varieties. Highest LER was obtained from both sugarcane varieties Q 83 and F 140 intercropped with Chinese radish. Heights of intercrops in rainy season were not different from those solid crops. Growth, number of shoot per stool, yield, yield components of two sugarcane varieties were less affected when grown intercrops as compared in monoculture. CCS of sugarcane in intercrops. was also showed no difference when compared to monocrops. Highest incomes were obtained from sweet corn intercropped with Q 83 and F 140 sugarcane varieties. Highest LER was obtained from both sugarcane varieties Q 83 and F 140 intercropped with sesame. F 140 sugarcane varieties were suitable for intercrop than Q 83. Different field crops gave higher benefit when intercropped with sugarcane than those in monoculture.
