Effect of root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) on growth of barley and its control

Fifteen barley cultivars were tested for resistance to Meloidogyne incognita. Gall rating indicated a range of responses from susceptible to highly resistant. The lowest gall rating was at 2.4 of cultivar BTYN 105 and BTYN 107 and the highest gall rating was at 3.3 of cultivar BTYN 115. The initial inoculum levels at 0, 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 4,000 juveniles/pot were investigated to determine the effect of nematode on yield components of barley in pot experiment. The highest gall rating was of barley inoculated with 4,000 juveniles/pot. At this inoculum level the yield components were decreased significantly. Oxamyl and carbofuran showed the highest efficient control, intermediate in aldicarb, carbosulfan and terbufos, but all of chemicals did not increase yield components of barley compared to barley without chemical. Retesting in field experiment, all previously mentioned chemicals showed less efficacy whereas soil fumigants, methyl bromide and dazomet, showed the promising control resulting in enhancing more growth and yield of barley and suppressed absolutely nematode population. Biological control of M. incognita by Paecilomyces lilacinus was conducted on barley to evaluate the inoculum level and times of application in soil. The same protection against M. incognita was attained with 8 g of fungus-infested sorghum kernels delivered in soil before planting and 2 times of 4 g before and at planting which resulted in more yield components compared with barley delivered fungus at planting time. All of barleys applied fungus had lower gall rating but fungus application could not enhance growths and yields of barley compared with barley inoculated with M.incognita alone.
