Barbados was chosen for the establishment of the cocoa quarantine station because it is the most easterly of the Caribbean islands and has no indigenous cocoa. It provides a safe yet relatively conducive environment to grow cocoa for quarantine purposes. Rootstocks are established from seed imported from Trinidad and new germplasm is imported as budwood or graftwood from the various countries of origin. Rootstocks are grown in an artificial peat-based medium in pots. A misting unit maintains a humid environment within the greenhouse. There is no virus indexing at the station but a small insect proof area is provided should such a facility become necessary. The quarantine period in Barbados is 12 months after which the material is imported into Trinidad and established in the ICG.T. The facility in Barbados is available to provide germplasm for export to third countries should this be requested.
