Effects on a domestic market of diversification from export sugar production: the case of Trinidad and Tobago

Small citrus farmers in Trinidad and Tobago have expressed concern about the diversification from export sugar production of the State's largest agribusiness concern - Caroni (1975) Limited. Concern is specifically about the Company's production of 750 ha. of oranges. This, the farmers expect, will directly impact on the price of oranges, thereby affecting their incomes. Econometric analysis was used to model the market for orange juice in Trinidad and Tobago and to forecast the impact of the production by Caroni (1975) Limited. It was concluded that farmers had a legitimate concern because from the model, production by Caroni (1975) Limited will greatly reduce the equilibrium price of oranges. Small farmers will have problems to survive in orange production as an economic activity. There may be the need therefore to limit imports of orange juice or to develop a larger export market for orange juice to absorb the additional production from Caroni (1975) Limited, if reasonable prices are to be maintained for the benefit of small producers.
