Acacia mangium is a large leguminous pioneering tree specie. Its centre of distribution is in the Far East where it usually establishes on disturbed areas. It requires maximum temperatures of 31-34 deg. C and rainfall of 1,000-5,000 mm/annum. It is generally found on Ultisols with pH 4.5. The plant produces a dense, all purpose hardwood with an attractive medium brown colour of high quality with potential for furniture, veneer, firewood, pulp, paper and particle board. It is also known for its potential as a high yielder of biomass. Since environmental and edaphic conditions were similar to Acacia's native habitat, it was established at the Centre. The Forestry Division of the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Marine Resources had received seeds for testing under the auspices of the Food and Agriculture Organisation in the mid-1980's. This was the source of SFC's planting material.
