The trials were carried out on leached brown forest soil of acid reaction, non-calcareous, with low humus content and average supply of phosphorus and potassium, in 1993. The following hybrids were used: ZP 539, NS 506, PKB 633, ZP 506 and NS 640. The unfavourable humidity and temperature conditions during the growing season had a negative effect on plant density, green mass and grain yield. The highest green mass yield (34.8 t/ha) and the highest (7.22 t/hs) grain yields were found in hybrid NS 640. Nutrients content in silage maize plants varied among hybrids and was somewhat higher in relation to the literature data. The content of nitrogen components, organic acids and pH value was within the limits set by other authors, while silage was estimated as very good after Fleag. The results, although obtained during one extreme year, show that maize production for grain and silage on leached brown soil was significant.
